The lesions commonly known as "Cavitations" are defined as Fatty Degenerative Osteonecrosis of the Maxillary or Mandibular Bone, hence the acronym FDOJ.

Also known as "Cavitational Osteonecrosis," fatty degenerative osteonecrosis, or "fatty degenerative osteonecrosis of the jaw", it was initially identified by pathologist Jerry Bouquot in 1992. Since then, it has been the subject of extensive studies that have contributed to establishing a solid scientific foundation in this field, with Dr. Johann Lechner standing out as a recognized authority worldwide. This disorder is characterized by the degeneration of bone tissue and the accumulation of adipose tissue in the jawbone or maxilla, which can lead to significant complications for the patient's oral and overall health.
